Abingdon Theatre Company is presenting a free reading of Michael Weller’s play Buyer Beware March 26 at 7 PM at DR2 Theatre as part of its Ghostlight Reading Series. The play, which looks at the legacy of controversial comedian Lenny Bruce, had been previously scheduled to play Brandeis University but was canceled after students expressed discomfort over its depiction of black people and its portrayal of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Weller’s Buyer Beware takes place on the Brandeis campus and follows a student named Ron who finds audio recordings of stand-up comedian Lenny Bruce from the ‘60s and plans a tribute performance in the style of the controversial comic. Instead, he provokes a campus protest and administrative panic that threaten the university's chance at a big endowment.

Weller is a Brandeis alum. In 2016, the playwright was a resident at the university, where he spent time researching the Lenny Bruce archives.
