The sounds of Motown head back to Broadway as Ain’t Too Proud — The Life and Times of the Temptations officially opens at the Imperial Theatre March 21. Preview performances started February 28. The opening coincides with the physical release of the jukebox musical's Original Broadway Cast Recording, available exclusively at the Broadway venue. The album will be made available digitally March 22 ahead of an April 19 wide physical release.
Featuring a book by Dominique Morisseau (marking the playwright’s Broadway debut), the musical uses the group’s hits to tell the story of their journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Audiences can expect to hear such tunes as “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “Get Ready,” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.”
The Des McAnuff-helmed production made its world premiere at California’s Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2017 before going on to play Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Toronto.
Leading the cast as The Temptations on Broadway are Derrick Baskin (Memphis) as Otis Williams, James Harkness (Beautiful) as Paul Williams, Jawan M. Jackson (Motown) as Melvin Franklin, Jeremy Pope (Choir Boy) as Eddie Kendricks, and Ephraim Sykes (Hamilton) as David Ruffin. Joining them are Saint Aubyn, Shawn Bowers, E. Clayton Cornelious, Taylor Symone Jackson, Jahi Kearse, Jarvis B. Manning Jr., Joshua Morgan, Rashidra Scott, Nasia Thomas, Christian Thompson, Candice Marie Woods, Esther Antoine, Marcus Paul James, Jelani Remy, and Curtis Wiley.
The Broadway production offers a digital ticket lottery (available to enter beginning at midnight the day of the performance) and an in-person student rush (two per customer with valid student I.D. when the box office opens).
Ain’t Too Proud features choreography by Sergio Trujillo, sets by Robert Bill, costumes by Paul Tazewell, lighting by Howell Binkley, sound design by Steve Canyon, and projections by Peter Nigrini. Casting is by Tara Rubin Casting and Merri Sugarman, CSA.
