MCC Theater celebrated the official opening of Jocelyn Bioh’s School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play at the Lucille Lortel Theatre October 22. The acclaimed comedy is playing Off-Broadway a second time following a sold-out debut from MCC in 2017.

Once again directed by Tony winner Rebecca Taichman, School Girls began performances October 16.

The cast of the remount is comprised of MaameYaa Boafo, Latoya Edwards, Paige Gilbert, Joanna A. Jones, Abena Mensah-Bonsu, Mirirai Sithole, Myra Lucretia Taylor, and Zenzi Williams.

Set in an exclusive, all-girls boarding school in Ghana in the ‘80s, School Girls explores themes of beauty, colorism, and self-worth. Paulina, the reigning Queen Bee, has her sights set on the Miss Universe pageant. But the arrival of new student Ericka captures the attention of the pageant recruiter and Paulina’s hive-minded friends.
