After appearing on The Today Show October 29, Kerry Washington continued her rounds, visiting LIVE with Kelly & Ryan and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
Currently starring in the new Broadway play American Son, Washington breathed a sigh of relief upon hitting the recliner on Colbert’s set saying, “Broadway is hard!
“Sometimes when I'm in rehearsal and I'm feeling frustrated, I will do a handstand,” she said. “If you see the world form a different perspective—literally—sometimes it helps me see the world from a different perspective mentally,” a strategy she adopted from her yoga-teaching days before she found more success as an actor.
Still, Washington assured audiences she relishes her time on stage. “On Scandal, I would get home and be brushing my teeth, and I would think, ‘Oh I wish I tried that thing in the scene.’ Suddenly something occurs to me that I should have done and in theatre you get to go back and do it the next day.”
While she loves theatre in general, Washington feels particularly proud of this play, which she also produces. “What I love about it is there are surprisingly more laughs than one would expect. I think we're living in a time in our country that we say are the least confusing times. I think we're really trying to figure out how the other can think the way we're thinking.”
Washington also appeared on LIVE with Kelly & Ryan, early in the day, where she explained one of the most compelling aspects of the play. “I assumed I would agree with certain characters and not others, and I felt really pulled in lots of different directions,” she said.
