Director of Production and Facilities

The award-winning Flea Theater seeks a highly motivated Director of Production and Facilities with excellent organizational, communication, logistical and technical skills to join our small entrepreneurial Off-Off Broadway organization.  The Flea is a downtown beacon for creative artists of every discipline, and for adventurous audiences seeking bold and inventive work. We are also home to The Bats, a resident company of artists, now with over 120 members who work and perform in all of our theaters.

An integral leader of the theater, the Director of Production and Facilities’ primary focus is to direct and administer all production elements, designs, schedules, personnel, and budgets for Flea productions and rentals and to supervise and oversee the day-to-day operations of running our new performance complex.  The Director of Production and Facilities supervises a staff of 2 technical directors and a costumer, works hand in hand with the General Manager and reports directly to the Producing Director.

Production Management
As Director of Production, this position organizes and oversees all areas of production and will take Flea productions from inception with the design team through load in and tech, opening, and strike. This also includes support during rehearsals and the run of the show.  The Director of Production is in charge of all labor, materials, and equipment from sourcing, to install, to striking. The Director of Production is expected to be computer literate in Mac, Microsoft Office and Vector Works and have an awareness of current trends in theater technology.  The Director of Production will assist with budgeting and expense tracking.

The Flea presents music, dance and alternative theater throughout our producing season.  Many of these companies are what we call Anchor Partners, itinerate companies who perform their season in our spaces.  The Director of Production and Facilities duties here include site visits with new companies, facilitating communication leading up to their time in our space and insuring that they and we have the proper staff, technical and equipment information for their productions.  The Director of Production and Facilities will be present for load in and load out and will conduct a final walkthrough of the space.   Finally, the Director of Production and Facilities will help solve any issues that may arise during rentals.

Facilities Management

The Flea recently completed an adaptive reuse of a building in Tribeca and opened a three theater complex.  As Director of Facilities, duties will include completion of the punch list and coordination with project and construction management to secure a certificate of occupancy and to insure that all of the buildings’ systems are in working order.  The Director of Facilities will maintain the building, liaise with all outside contractors, including janitorial and waste removal, and handle all building issues.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5+ years experience in technical theater/performing arts and/or facilities maintenance as well as a commitment to achieving high standards with limited resources.  We anticipate a candidate with strong personnel management skills as well as ability to plan and prioritize work effectively and to interact with artistic professionals at all career levels.  Experience and contacts in out-sourcing contractors and professional labor is a must.  Finally, we hope the candidate will have a passion for contemporary theater.  Salary is commensurate with experience and includes health and dental benefits, which are paid 100% by The Flea. This position will require evening and weekends as needed.

Interested candidates should submit a resume, cover letter and 2 references to as soon as possible.  The Flea is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to diversity onstage and off.
