25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Rona Lisa Peretti: The number-one realtor in Putnam County, a former Putnam County Spelling Bee Champion herself, and the returning moderator. She is a sweet woman who loves children, but she can be very stern when it comes to dealing with Vice Principal Panch and his feelings for her. Her interest in the competition is unflagging and drives it forward. Vocal Range B3 - F5
Chip Tolentino: An athletic, social, boy scout and champion of the Twenty-Fourth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, he returns to defend his title, but he finds puberty hitting at an inopportune moment. Vocal Range C4 - B5
Leaf Coneybear: The second runner-up in his district, Leaf gets into the competition on a lark and finds everything about the bee incredibly amusing. He is home-schooled and comes from a large family of former hippies. He has severe Attention Deficit Disorder and spells words correctly while in a trance. Vocal Range A3 - A5
Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre: Logainne is the youngest and most politically aware speller, often making comments about current political figures. She is driven by internal and external pressure, but above all by a desire to win to make her two fathers proud. She is somewhat of a neat freak, speaks with a lisp, and will be back next year. Vocal Range A3 - F5
Olive Ostrovsky: A young newcomer to competitive spelling. Her mother is in an ashram in India, and her father is working late, as usual, but he is trying to come sometime during the bee. Having found comfort in its words and vastness, Olive made friends with her dictionary at a very young age, helping her to make it to the competition. She starts enormously shy, and shyly blossoms. Vocal Range B3 - F5
William Barfee: A Putnam County Spelling Bee finalist last year, he was eliminated because of an allergic reaction to peanuts and is back for vindication. His famous "Magic Foot" method of spelling has boosted him to spelling glory, even though he only has one working nostril and a touchy, bullying personality. He develops a crush on Olive. Vocal Range E4 - B5
Marcy Park: A recent transfer from Virginia, Marcy placed ninth in last year's nationals. She speaks six languages, is a member of all-American hockey, a championship rugby player, plays Chopin and Mozart on multiple instruments, sleeps only three hours a night, hides in the bathroom cabinet, and is getting very tired of always winning. She is the poster child for the Over-Achieving Asian, and attends a Catholic school called "Our Lady of Intermittent Sorrows." She is also not allowed to cry. Vocal Range C4 - E5
Mitch Mahoney: The Official Comfort Counselor. An ex-convict, Mitch is performing his community service with the Bee, and hands out juice boxes to losing students. He has no idea how to offer comfort, but does find himself wishing he could find a way to make the kids feel better. Vocal Range E4 - A5
Douglas Panch: The Vice Principle. Frustrated with his life, he finds the drive of the young spellers alien to him. After five years' absence from the Bee, Panch returns as judge. There was an "incident" at the Twentieth Annual Bee, but he claims to be in "a better place" now, thanks to a high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis. He is infatuated with Rona Lisa Peretti, but she does not return his affections. Non-singing role.
She Loves Me:
Arpad Laszlo: Tenor E4 – Bb2– Delivery boy at Maraczek’s Parfumerie. His exuberance is infectious and commitment to his job remarkable. He is ambitious and adorable.
Ladislav Sipos: Baritenor E4 – A2 – Middle Aged. An average employee at Maraczek’s Parfumerie. A confidant to Georg, his is an optimistic family man who is always even keeled.
Ilona Ritter: Mezzo-Soprano – mid-twenties to late 30’s. Employed at Maraczek’s Parfumerie. She is sexy, confident and learned in the ways of romance, but longing for something more from the game of love.
Steven Kodaly: Tenor B2 – A4 – mid-twenties to late 30’s. A well respected and liked employee at Maraczek’s Parfumerie. Though he is considered dapper and occasionally charming, he is more of a shallow womanizer.
Georg Nowack: Baritenor F4 – B2 – mid-twenties to late 30’s. An established employee of Maraczek’s Parfumerie, he resembles a hopeless romantic. Shy, intelligent and soft spoken. A dreamer with bright eyes towards the world.
Mr. Maraczek: Baritone C4 – B2 – middle aged – Owner of Maraczek’s Parfumerie. With a commanding presence, his dedication to the trade is rivaled only by his faithfulness to his wife. Extremely likeable.
Amalia Balash: Soprano B5 to C4 – mid twenties to late 30’s. The eager new employee at Maraczek’s Parfumerie. Despite being a skilled saleswoman she easily becomes intimidated and nervous – she is quickly distracted. Very bright, well educated, a lover of literature and a dreamer.
Ensemble: 3 men & 3 women to play multiple featured roles throughout the production. Must be excellent musicians with strong movement skills.
Hansel & Gretl & Heidi & Gunter:
HEIDI MEYERHAUSEN: Age 12, Mezzo Soprano A feisty tween who wants out from under her mother’s long list of crazy rules & traditions… and is willing to take action to make it happen.
GÜNTER MEYERHAUSEN: Age 9, Tenor A sweet, smart, quirky 5th-grader who loves doing impressions and has, until very recently, enjoyed the insular company of his family.
GRETL MEYERHAUSEN: Age 40, Alto A woman trying to raise her children in an unfamiliar world filled with dangers. A survivor trapped in the endless loop of her childhood trauma, determined not to let her children face the same fate.
HANSEL: Age 43, Baritenor Gretl’s older brother, now returned… or is he? An übercool hybrid of Old World and New – leather pants, feather in his cap, but well-traveled. Slick.
KRIMELDA: Timeless, A cannibalistic witch who feeds on the children of Medieval Lüneberg. Maniacally focused on Gretl who pushed her in the oven 31 years ago, she has reconstituted herself from a severed finger in order to seek revenge.
REAL HANSEL: Also plays J&J’s POP, A hermit suffering from the trauma of his childhood. He grew up truly alone in his empty family home, having been left behind in 1315 to fend for himself. To cope, he writes.
KEVIN CHAMBERS: Age 12, Tenor, Heidi’s classmate and next-door neighbor. An outsider himself, he is observant of others and interested in their lives. A good friend, if anyone would give him a chance.
JENNY / BRIGITTA
JULIE / OLGA
BRIAN / KLAUS
Privileged modern-day kids, Brian, Jenny & Julie are products of their time and not very understanding of differences. Back in 1346, Klaus, Brigitta & Olga are also products of their time, at ease with horrible outcomes and early deaths… and big fans of the legendary Gretl.
KEVIN’S DAD / MR. DEVOORT
JAR HEAD 1
BRIAN’S MOM / MRS.
J&J’S DAD / MR. O’MALLEY /
PRINCIPAL WAYERSKI /
JAR HEAD 3
Modern-day parents of modern-day households. Kevin’s Dad is a single parent, Jenny & Julie’s fathers see more of their smartphones than they do their kids, and Brian’s Mom can’t help but let him run the show. As the teachers, they fulfill Günter’s over-the-top fantasy of hunting witches. Principal Wayerski is the quintessential big king of a small kingdom… a little squeamy. Back in 1346, the JAR HEADS are the pickled heads of KRIMELDA’s past victims. They’re on her side… or their side… or they’re just weird singing pickles.
Robbie Hart: Tenor C6-B3 – The lead singer of a banc. Handsome and charismatic. A truly “nice” guy that has the classic lead singer aura and personality. Also a bit of a dreamer. In love with love until Linda leaves him at the altar and breaks his heart.
Sammy: Baritenor A5-C4 - The bass player in the wedding band and one of Robbie’s best friends. A total guy’s guy, but beneath his pretending to love being a bachelor he is actually in love with Holly.
George: Baritenor A5 – C4 – The wedding band’s keyboardist and one of Robbie’s best friends. The foil to Sammy’s super guy attitude and an homage to Boy George.
Julie Sullivan: Soprano F5 – G3 – Waitress. The girl next door. Engages to Glen but falls in love with Robbie and is conflicted as to who to choose. Empathetic, caring and brave.
Holly: Mezzo: E3 – A3 – Julia’s cousin. Very confident with her sexuality and always up for a fun time out, but wants to be loved and is looking for romantic fulfillment in all the wrong places. She’s in love with Sammy.
Glen Guglia: Tenor B5 – D4: Julia’s Fiance. A Wall Street broker. He is rich, shallow and materialistic. Constantly tries to buy Julia’s love with money. He is a womanizer.
Rosie: Alto C5 – C4: Robbie’s grandmother who raised him. Motherly but adventurous and always trying to remain ‘hip’ despite her age.
Linda: Mezzo D5 – A3: Robbie’s fiancé who leaves him at the altar. Keeps Robbie around as a back-up plan. Is more in love with the idea of Robbie being a rock stay than she actually is with Robbie.
